MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 19-year-old has been arrested for second degree murder.

Memphis Police said Andrae Tewari admitted to killing Frank Gaines Whitington nearly three weeks ago in the Championship Hills apartment complex.

The 18-year-old victim had just graduated from Memphis University School two weeks prior to his death.

WREG has confirmed Whitington was a cousin of Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham.

Police have released very few details about the case but neighbors who live in the quiet southeast Memphis complex where it happened were glad to hear an arrest has been made.

“It’s just a shame that people do that type of stuff. I never thought it would happen over here but it did,” said Marquel Turner, who lives in the gated community where Whitington was found dead.

Police said the MUS football player, known as “Gaines” to friends was shot.

But that’s about all they would say about the case.

“I was askin’ what happened, they wouldn’t tell me anything,” said Turner.

On Wednesday, another teen, Andrae Tewari, was arrested.

Police have not released a motive.

Turner said he just thankful he has some answers.

“I’m just glad they caught the guy and it makes me feel a whole lot better instead of someone still runnin around on the loose,” said Turner.

Friends have remembered Whitington by using #FlyHighGaines on Twitter.

MUS’ Headmaster told WREG he was set to go to the University of Colorado in the fall and he had a bright future.

As for the suspect, Tewari, WREG learned he’s already facing aggravated robbery charges and was set to be in court later this month.

Neighbors said this is a sad case for everyone involved but hopefully the Whitington’s family now has some closure.

“I just feel like it’s justice for the family, get somebody’s me that off the street, that’s good for the community,” said Nigel Johnson who lives in the complex.

Tewari’s bond has been set at $800,000.

He is set to be in court next week.
