MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On this Memorial Day, loved ones are mourning the loss of a soldier shot and killed over the weekend near the FedEx Forum in Downtown Memphis.

Police said 26-year-old Calvin Wilhite was walking near Fourth and MLK with his girlfriend early Sunday morning when someone fired several shots at him from a car.

They said Wilhite was headed toward Beale Street when he got into an argument with some people in the car who were trying to talk to his girlfriend.

Witnesses said when Wilhite turned away from the vehicle someone in the passenger seat opened fire.

“It’s senseless. You know, you got a young man on Memorial Day– like, today is a day when you honor him because he’s in the Armed Forces, but now you got to prepare for his funeral,” said a friend.

A friend, who didn’t want to be identified, said Wilhite was an Army Reserve soldier and had two kids.

“Just had a baby a couple of months ago,” said the friend.

He said in just seconds he was taken away from his children forever.

“This guy didn’t know when he left the house that he wasn’t going to be able to come home and be with his family,” said the friend.

Witnesses could only tell police they saw the suspects leave south on Fourth in a silver or green Ford Taurus.

Police are urging anyone with any information to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.

The victim’s girlfriend also put out a plea on her Facebook page Monday asking anyone who hears anything to contact her or police.
