(Memphis)  A woman is fighting for her life after she was shot several times outside Halle Stadium in southeast Memphis.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Chip Washington says the victim, 24-year-old Monique Smith and the suspect, 29-year-old Vernon Walton pulled into the stadium’s parking lot in separate cars around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

Washington says Walton got out, walked up to Smith’s car, pulled out a .45 caliber handgun and began shooting..

Smith was hit at least six times. She was taken to the MED in critical condition.

Walton was taken into custody at the scene and is charged with attempted first degree murder.

Washington says the preliminary investigation suggests the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute because Walton was Smith’s ex-boyfriend.

Washington says Smith filed an order of protection against Walton last week.

The shooting was unrelated to a candlelight vigil that had just wrapped up at Halle Stadium for a Ridgeway High School student. 16-year-old Dennis Price, Jr. died Sunday in his sleep.
