MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two people are charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal after they left a dog in a locked car at the Wolfchase Galleria.
Alexis Cain and Charlie Parker locked the Terrier in a car while they went shopping.
Police noted the temperature was 99 degrees, which means it was likely 140 degrees or more in the car.
Some people walking by the car saw the dog was in distress and were able to get it out, but it died.
The dog’s internal body temperature was at least 110 degrees, the highest the veterinarian’s thermometer would go, and the body stayed at that temperature for 30 minutes after the dog died.
A necropsy determined the dog died from extreme hyperthermia and dehydration.
It is unclear how long the dog was in the car. Police said it was two hours between when the dog was found and when Cain and Parker came out of the mall.
Both have a bond of $5,000.
