MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A mother said Whitehaven High School suspended her 16-year-old daughter for a second time this school year over a poorly handled bullying situation.

WREG first told you about Ashley Perry last month when the school suspended her daughter for fighting.

Perry said her daughters have documented complaints with the school about other girls bullying them, and her daughter was only trying to defend herself.

Perry said Whitehaven High School suspended her daughter again on her third day back in class.

She said the school was handling the bullying issue by assigning her daughter a seat on the bus. Perry said children were sitting in her daughter’s seat, so she sat down in an available one nearby.

“She just sat down in a seat so they could leave, and the driver never said anything to her about, you know, you’re not where you’re supposed to sit or anything. They just drove on to school,” Perry said.

She said when her daughter arrived, the school suspended her for sitting in the wrong seat. Perry said the school is picking on her, so she withdrew both of her daughters from Whitehaven.

Shelby County Schools released this statement:

Shelby County Schools takes all allegations of bullying and any threat to student safety very seriously. The Whitehaven High School administration has been in contact with these students and their parents. Interventions have also been put in place by the school to prevent any additional incidents.
